Recommendations in case of data loss
Recommendations in case of data loss
Immediately shut down the computer. The sooner you contact the specialist, the better the chances of restoring your data. Trying to restore the files on your own using all possible data recovery software may lead to more damage to the logical structure of the file system and make it impossible to restore any data.
Never allow CHKDSK and SCANDISK file system repair utilities to be launched. They can start automatically during computer restart. These utilities will not help anymore, but they can make the situation worse. In case they have already started, allow them to finish, as turning the power off when the recovery utilities are working may lead to extensive file system damage.
If you hear knocking sound or other odd noises coming from the disk, shut down the operating system and turn off the computer.
Do not write new files on the damaged disk. If you have accidentally deleted files from the PC disk, it is important that you do not perform any save file operations. The new files may be overwritten over the deleted files, and then it will be hard to recover them. In case the file was deleted from the server's network folder, it’s necessary to turn off the server as soon as possible. Otherwise, other users can overwrite the disk sectors containing the data from the deleted file, consequently this file will be lost forever.
Do not perform the defragmentation of the damaged disk. Many users, while trying to localise the damage, use disk defragmentation utilities, which is strictly forbidden, as the sectors containing information about the deleted files will be rewritten with data from other files.
In case the failure was detected during computer start-up, you should analyse the error message and write it down in full.
